Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Atomic Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, is a haunting and poignant symbol of the destructive power of nuclear weapons. On August 6, 1945, the city of Hiroshima was targeted by the United States with an atomic bomb during World War II. At 8:15 AM, the bomb detonated almost directly above the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, now known as the Atomic Bomb Dome. The building was one of the few structures left standing near the bomb's hypocenter. Today, the dome stands preserved in its post-explosion state, serving as a stark reminder of the nuclear devastation. The site has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolizing the hope for world peace and the elimination of nuclear weapons. The structure's skeletal frame, juxtaposed against modern Hiroshima's bustling cityscape, provides a place for reflection on the past and a message for the future. It's part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which includes other monuments, the Peace Memorial Museum, and the Cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
