Ayutthaya Island in Thailand, part of the Ayutthaya Province, is an island formed by the Chao Phraya, the Lopburi, and the Pa Sak rivers. This historical island holds the remnants of the old city of Ayutthaya, which was the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. The old city of Ayutthaya, founded in 1350, was one of the world's largest urban areas and a center of global diplomacy and commerce until it was destroyed by the Burmese army in 1767. Nowadays, Ayutthaya is known for its archeological sites and a vast number of ancient temples, statues, and palaces which are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ruins, including the magnificent Ayutthaya Historical Park, give visitors a vivid glimpse into the city's past glory. The landscape is composed of impressive prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, which are often partially restored, offering a picture of the original grandeur of the city's architecture and urban planning.
