Ayutthaya Historical Park, located in the city of Ayutthaya, Thailand, is an archaeological site that contains the ruins of the former capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, which was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350. The park showcases the ancient city's splendor with its remaining palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries, and statues. It was once a prosperous and cosmopolitan urban area and a center for political, economic, and cultural activities. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, the park covers an area of approximately 289 hectares and contains numerous significant structures such as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Wat Mahathat—famous for the Buddha head entwined within tree roots—and Wat Ratchaburana. The historical park offers a glimpse of the impressive architecture and art that flourished in the former Siamese capital. History enthusiasts and tourists alike explore these ruins by bike, on foot, or by hiring a tuk-tuk, enriching their understanding of Thailand's cultural heritage. The park embodies the rise and fall of an era, as Ayutthaya was eventually razed by the Burmese army in 1767, leading to the decline of what was once a mighty empire.
An absolutely great day out. Easy to get to via train and hire a tuck tuck driver for a few hours. Wish I had more time as the town surrounded the park but you don’t know it when at each Wat you visit..
Amazing Place, especially for me as I am a person who has interest in History and monuments. recommended to Visit from Bangkok.
