Type of destination: Historical Site/Market Street
Ideal visit duration: 1-3 hours
Barkhor Street, a bustling and ancient round street surrounding the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, is the most famous pilgrimage circuit and commercial center in the city. This sacred path, known as a kora, which faithful pilgrims traverse to pay homage, also supports a thriving array of shops and stalls that sell religious artifacts, handicrafts, and local specialties. Lined with traditional Tibetan-style buildings, Barkhor Street captures the essence of Tibetan culture. Visitors can observe the intimate rituals of prostrating pilgrims, spin prayer wheels, and explore the vibrant local market. The street has always been a window into Tibetan life, allowing visitors to experience the genuine hospitality of Tibetans. Preservation efforts have maintained the architecture and street layout, reflecting Lhasa's urban history and developing urban culture. Here, history merges with the contemporary as shops sell both age-old and modern wares, from exquisite thangkas and butter lamps to clothing and jewelry, making it an ideal place to find a token of Tibetan culture to take home.
It was truly impressive to see people walk clockwise around the "center". There are some great shops to pick up some souvenirs. We pick up some cheap "thangkas" for 108 rmb, some great magnets, hats, ..
The street around the Jokhang temple is great for shopping (with many souvenirs shops with hats, jewellery and tankas). It’s also a great place for photos. A must see !
