Best Time to Visit Barkhor Street, Lhasa, China

The optimal time to visit Barkhor Street in Lhasa is during the spring and autumn seasons, which encompass the months of May through June and September to October. During these times, the weather is typically mild, with temperatures ranging comfortably between 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), providing an ideal climate for outdoor activities such as walking around the bustling street circuit and exploring the myriad of shops. The clear skies and reduced rainfall in these seasons also enhance your chance of experiencing the vibrant cultural atmosphere and traditional Tibetan architecture without interruption. Moreover, these periods are marked by several Tibetan festivals, which can offer a deeper insight into local customs and festivities.

However, if you are interested in immersing yourself in the spiritual aspect of Barkhor Street, the Losar Festival (Tibetan New Year), usually falling in February or March, may be an opportune time to visit, although it is colder then. During Losar, Barkhor Street comes alive with an even more profound cultural significance, as it is thronged by pilgrims and locals participating in religious activities and celebrating the new year with great fervor. That said, visitors should be prepared for colder weather during this period and may have to contend with larger crowds. Whichever time you choose to visit, remember to dress in layers, respect local customs, and be mindful of the high altitude when planning your itinerary.
