Must-Try Foods In Buddhas Of Bamiyan (Bamyan) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Buddhas of Bamiyan, Bamyan, Afghanistan

The Buddhas of Bamiyan were once the backdrop for an array of Buddhist monastic communities. As such, the food in this area during the early centuries would have been greatly influenced by the Buddhist precept of non-harm, leading to a diet primarily consisting of vegetarian dishes. With the advent of Islam, the cuisine evolved to incorporate more meats, excluding pork due to religious dietary laws. However, Bamiyan, being a part of the wider Silk Road, also saw influences from various travelers and traders, blending spices and cooking techniques from both the East and West.
