Traveling to Byblos Old Town, Lebanon

Byblos Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Lebanon's most picturesque and ancient towns. Here is how you can reach this historic jewel:

Arriving by Plane

Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY) is the nearest international airport to Byblos. It is located approximately 42 kilometers south of Byblos. Upon arrival at the airport, you can choose from several transportation options:

• Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the airport. A ride to Byblos may take about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
• Car Rental: Numerous car rental agencies operate within the airport. Having your own vehicle provides flexibility for exploring Byblos and the surrounding areas.

Arriving by Road

If you are already in Lebanon, the most convenient way to reach Byblos is by road:

• Private Car: The Lebanese coastal highway connects Beirut to Byblos. The drive is relatively straightforward and well-signposted.
• Bus: Buses from Beirut's Charles Helou station run regularly to Byblos. This is an economical option, though travel times may vary due to stops and traffic.
• Service Taxi: These shared taxis are a common mode of transport in Lebanon and can be a more comfortable alternative to buses. Agree on the fare before departure.

Once in Byblos

The Old Town of Byblos is compact and much of it can be explored on foot. Parking can be limited within the historical areas, so walking is often the most convenient and enjoyable way to see the sights, such as the ancient port, the Crusader Castle, and the souks.

Additional Tips

• Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Byblos is from April to October when the weather is pleasant.
• Language Considerations: English is commonly spoken by locals involved in the tourism industry, but learning a few phrases in Arabic can be helpful and appreciated.
• Currency: The Lebanese Pound (LBP) is the official currency; however, US dollars are also widely accepted. It's advisable to carry cash as smaller establishments may not accept cards due to periodic economic uncertainties.
• Safety: As with all travel, keep abreast of the latest travel advisories from your home country and exercise common sense security practices.
