Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's most iconic landmarks, offering panoramic views of the city. Located in the heart of Edinburgh, it is easily accessible by various modes of transport. Here's a guide on how to reach Calton Hill:
Walking is a popular option as Calton Hill is just a short walk from the city center. From the east end of Princes Street, it is approximately a 5-10 minute walk. Simply head towards the Playhouse Theatre and continue up Calton Road, followed by a climb up the steps or the sloped path to the summit.
Bus: Several local buses serve the areas around Calton Hill, including services 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 14, 19, 26, 34, 44, 45, 104, 113, 124, X15, X26 and X44. Get off at the nearest bus stop on Princes Street or Leith Street and walk up to the hill.
Tram: If you’re taking the tram, the closest tram stop is on St Andrew Square. From there, it's just a short walk to the hill.
Driving to Calton Hill is possible, however, parking is very limited. The nearest public parking is on Regent Road or at the Omni Centre on Greenside Row.
There are bike racks available at the entrance to Calton Hill from Regent Road, so you can safely lock up your bicycle before exploring on foot.
Waverley Railway Station is Edinburgh's main train station and is a mere 10-minute walk from the hill. On exiting the station from its north exit onto Princes Street, you will see Calton Hill to the east.
Please note that while the main path up Calton Hill is paved, some areas can be steep and may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
Always check for the latest travel updates and roadworks that may affect your journey, and consider the time of day and seasonal changes as daylight hours can affect your visit.
