History of Tourism in Cameron Highlands

Since the colonial era, Cameron Highlands has been a favored destination for those looking to escape the tropical heat of Malaysia. The history of tourism here can be traced back to the 1930s, when British surveyor William Cameron first mapped out the area. With its cool climate and fertile land, it wasn't long before the Cameron Highlands became home to tea plantations, vegetable farms, and holiday bungalows for British expatriates. The construction of the all-weather road in 1931 greatly improved accessibility to the area, leading to a steady growth in tourist influx.

In the post-colonial period, the region continued to thrive as a holiday destination for locals and international tourists attracted by its temperate weather, lush landscapes, and colonial heritage. The establishment of attractions such as the Cameron Butterfly Garden added to the region's charm, broadening the scope of activities available to visitors beyond the tea estate visits and nature walks that were already popular.

The Cameron Butterfly Garden Experience

The Butterfly Garden is nestled amidst the verdant hills, providing a controlled environment for butterflies to thrive and breed. In addition to the myriad species of butterflies, visitors can also encounter other insects and invertebrate species—a delightful educational experience for both children and adults. The dedication to conserving and educating people about these creatures underscores the garden's importance as a biodiversity hotspot.
