Type of destination: Historical Temple
Chakhar Lhakhang, also referred to as the 'Iron Castle,' is a significant historical and spiritual site located in the town of Jakar in central Bhutan's Bumthang District. This modest temple is famed for being a reincarnation of the palace of the Indian King Sindhu Raja who first invited Guru Rinpoche to Bumthang. The original palace was said to have been constructed of iron hence the name 'Iron Castle', but what stands now is a more recent structure since the original has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries. The current temple was built in the 14th century and contains a number of important relics and statues. It is often visited by pilgrims and tourists who are trekking through the cultural heartlands of Bhutan. Visitors to Chakhar Lhakhang can experience Bhutanese history, admire traditional architecture, and learn about the spiritual heritage that is tightly woven into the fabric of Bumthang and indeed all of Bhutan.
