Christopher Columbus House, located in Genoa, Italy, is an important historical site claimed to be the birthplace of the famed explorer, Christopher Columbus. While historians debate the authenticity of this being his actual birthplace, the reconstructed house serves as a museum dedicated to the life and voyages of Columbus. The original house was destroyed during French bombardments in the late 17th century; however, the current structure was rebuilt in 18th century, mindful of the style and materials of the period Columbus would have lived. Visitors can explore the multi-story building, which includes period furniture and reproductions of nautical instruments. The house also exhibits copies of documents and maps related to the explorer's voyages to the New World. Surrounding the house is the atmospheric old quarter of Genoa, which, with its narrow lanes and medieval buildings, provides context to the era in which Columbus lived.
