Type of destination: Museum / Educational Attraction
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Biosfera, also known as La Bolla (The Bubble), is a glass and steel spherical structure located in the Old Harbor (Porto Antico) area of Genoa, Italy. Designed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano, it was inaugurated in 2001. This 20-meter diameter transparent sphere is both an architectural wonder and an educational exhibit. It houses a tropical environment, replete with various species of plants, trees, tropical flowers, birds, butterflies, and reptiles, meticulously maintained to mimic the conditions of a tropical rainforest ecosystem. The humidity and temperature inside are controlled to support the enclosed biodiversity. Visitors can embark on an immersive journey into the microcosm of tropical nature, viewing and learning about the delicate balances that govern these environments. The Biosfera is not only a tourist attraction but also an educational facility that raises awareness about the importance of preserving the Earth's ecosystems. It sits prominently by the sea, offering a striking contrast to the historic buildings of Genoa’s thriving port area, and is a part of the Porto Antico's revitalization and urban redevelopment projects that aim to enhance the area’s cultural and scientific appeal.
