Daegu, also spelled Taegu and officially known as Daegu Metropolitan City, is the fourth-largest city in South Korea. It is located in the southeastern part of the country, nestled in a basin surrounded by low mountains. Daegu serves as the core of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region, one of the major economic and cultural hubs in South Korea. Known for its hot summers, Daegu has earned the nickname 'DaeFrica', combining Daegu and Africa. Historically, the city was a crucial center for the textile industry, fostering rapid economic growth throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Beyond its industrial base, Daegu is famous for its apple orchards and the high-quality apples produced in the region. The city is also well-known for its numerous festivals and cultural events, including the Daegu International Jazz Festival, Daegu International Musical Festival, and the annual Daegu International Bodypainting Festival. Additionally, Daegu is a central transportation hub, with extensive rail and road networks facilitating travel to other parts of South Korea.
