Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is located in Dazaifu city, Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, and is among the most revered Shinto shrines dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician who is deified as Tenjin, the god of learning. Established in 905, the shrine is a picturesque destination adorned with over 6,000 plum trees which blossom spectacularly in spring, symbolizing scholarship and perseverance. The shrine complex encompasses several structures including the main hall, a treasure house, and secondary shrines. Visitors often roam the sando, or traditional approach to the shrine, flanked by shops selling local specialities and omikuji (fortune-telling slips). The shrine is also famous for the 'Tobiume', a legendary plum tree that is said to have followed Michizane from Kyoto to Dazaifu. Known for its cultural significance and historical architecture, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine hosts several festivals, with the most significant being the Tenjin Festival, celebrating the deity's enshrinement. It's a place of learning, where students come to pray for success in exams, making it a symbol of perseverance and wisdom in Japanese culture.
