By Air

There is no direct air transportation to Ella. However, for those who prefer a faster route from Colombo, taking a domestic flight to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) near Hambantota and then traveling by road to Ella may be an option.

By Road

Ella is well connected by road. Visitors can chooses between a taxi, a rented car, or public buses that operate from various cities within Sri Lanka.

From Colombo:

  • Private Taxi: Hiring a private taxi from Colombo to Ella can take about 5-6 hours.
  • Bus: Regular buses run from Colombo to Wellawaya, and from there one can take a local bus or tuk-tuk to reach Dhowa Rock Temple.

From Kandy:

  • Bus: There are direct buses from Kandy to Ella. Once in Ella, you can hire a taxi or tuk-tuk to reach the temple, which is about 12 km from Ella town.
  • Drive: If you prefer to drive, the journey is approximately 135km and can take around 4 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.

By Train

The train journey to Ella is renowned for being one of the most scenic routes in the world. Trains from cities like Colombo and Kandy run regularly to Ella. From the Ella train station, the Dhowa Rock Temple is about a 20 minute drive. Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available at the station.

Opening Hours: The Dhowa Rock Temple is generally open from 8 am to 5 pm. It's best to visit during daylight hours to fully appreciate the site's art and architecture.
