Nice hike, horrid scam
Sad to say we were scammed by farming locals here as we tried to enjoy the half day hike to Ella Rock. Signs have been either tampered with or made up as part of a fairly devious network of locals which fooled nearly all the tourists we met. Do not accept any help or direction from locals. We were seemingly helpfully pointed down a track by locals and the ruse was then taken over by a local lady who continued to send us the wrong way then "rescued" us, "guided" us and then stopped on the track and demanded money. Nearly everyone we met (15 to 20 singles, couples, groups) had experienced the same by a scarily large network of local people. The rip offs ranged from. 500 to 5000 Lkr and made for an uneasy, unpleasant day. Be sure of your route, use GPS or a testable trail app and do not trust the signage or locals. Apart from the scam it's a great half day hike. You have to pay 950 rs cash only for the last 50 ms to see the view. The reality of travel.
