Guia Fortress is a historical military fort, chapel, and lighthouse complex in Macao, China. Built between 1622 and 1638 by the Portuguese to defend the colony against the Dutch and other enemies, it is a testament to Macau's strategic significance in maritime trade and colonial history. The complex is situated on the highest point of the Guia Hill, providing panoramic views of the city and the South China Sea. The lighthouse, constructed in 1865, is the first modern lighthouse on the Chinese coast and stands 91 meters above sea level. The chapel, built in the early 17th century, is dedicated to Our Lady of Guia, and features frescoes that are among the oldest Western-style frescoes in China. The fortress was equipped with cannons, military barracks, and an ammunition cache. Today, Guia Fortress is part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site represents a unique blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures, and it's highly valued for its historical and cultural significance, attracting scholars, tourists, and history enthusiasts alike.
