GUM Department Store (Moscow) History

A Brief History of GUM Department Store as a Tourist Attraction

The GUM Department Store, known in Russian as "ГУМ", is an iconic shopping mall located on the Red Square in the heart of Moscow. Since its inception, GUM has been an integral part of Moscow's cultural and social life, attracting not only shoppers but also tourists from around the world.

The Origins of GUM

Originally known as the Upper Trading Rows, the GUM Department Store was built between 1890 and 1893 by architect Alexander Pomerantsev. The structure featured an innovative metal framework and glass roof, making it one of the most modern shopping galleries of its time. The combination of its prime location, architectural grandeur, and wide range of goods quickly made it a focal point for Muscovites and visitors alike.

GUM in the Soviet Era

After the 1917 Revolution, GUM was nationalized and continued to operate, albeit under various roles throughout Soviet history. At certain points, it was used for governmental purposes and was at times closed to the public. However, by the 1950s, it was reinstated as a department store. During the Soviet era, GUM remained a symbol of state retail, known for its rare collection of high-quality goods in a country where such items were typically scarce.

Post-Soviet Tourism Boom

Following the fall of the Soviet Union, GUM regained its status as a prestigious shopping mall. It was refurbished to its original splendor and became one of Moscow's must-visit landmarks. The store's proximity to the Red Square and the Kremlin made it a natural draw for tourists, who came to admire its architecture and shop for luxury goods.

GUM: A Modern Retail and Leisure Destination

Today, GUM is not only a shopping destination but also a cultural and historical landmark. It hosts high-end boutiques, diverse dining options, and an array of events throughout the year, such as fashion shows, exhibitions, and festivals that appeal to both locals and tourists.
