Best Time To Visit Gyz Kala And Oglan Kala (Merv) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Gyaur Kala and Erk Kala, Ancient Merv, Turkmenistan

The optimal time to visit the impressive ruins of Gyaur Kala and Erk Kala in Ancient Merv is during the spring months of March to May. During this period, you can enjoy mild temperatures and pleasant weather, which is ideal for exploring the extensive archaeological sites. The spring also welcomes the season of Newroz (or Nowruz), the Persian New Year, which is celebrated with various cultural events and could enhance your travel experience. However, it's advisable to keep in mind that occasional sandstorms can occur, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and eyewear.

If you cannot visit in the spring, the next best period would be during the autumn, particularly from September to November. The climate remains tolerable for outdoor activities, and the tourist crowds are generally thinner. The summer months, from June to August, should be avoided if possible, as the desert climate sees extreme heat that can make daytime explorations quite challenging. Winter, from December to February, can also be a suitable time, but temperatures can be quite cold and some facilities might have reduced hours or services.
