Merv is one of the oldest and best-preserved oasis-cities along the Silk Roads in Central Asia. Among its most famous ruins are Gyaur Kala and Erk Kala, formerly referred to as Gyz Kala and Oglan Kala. These ancient mud-brick fortresses are key historical sites, giving insight into the area's rich history.
To visit Gyaur Kala and Erk Kala, you must first make your way to the city of Mary, which is the nearest major city to the historical site of Merv.
Mary Airport (MYP) is the nearest airport serving domestic flights from the capital city, Ashgabat, and other regional airports. International travelers would need to fly into Ashgabat International Airport (ASB) and then catch a connecting domestic flight to Mary.
The Turkmenistan Railway operates trains to Mary from various cities, including Ashgabat. The journey from Ashgabat to Mary takes approximately 6-7 hours.
