Hemis National Park is located in the eastern part of the Ladakh region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in 1981, it extends over 4,400 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in South Asia. Hemis is famous for being the home to a dense population of snow leopards, especially in the Rumbak Valley. The park is characterized by high-altitude landscapes, with steep, rugged canyons and barren, snow-covered mountains, which are also home to Tibetan wolves, red foxes, Eurasian brown bears, and golden eagles, among other wildlife. It includes the catchments of Markha, Sumdah and Rumbak, and parts of the Zanskar Range. The park is named after the famous Hemis Monastery, which is a significant Buddhist monastery in Ladakh. The region is also culturally significant with ancient gompas and hermitages, a testament to the rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Its high-altitude ecosystem is delicate and largely untouched by human presence, offering an unparalleled trekking and wildlife-watching experience.

Snow Leopard Paradise
During winters snow leopards descend down for hunting in search of their prey. It is the best wildlife outing in Ladakh.
