Stakna Monastery or Stakna Gompa is a serene Buddhist monastery of the Drugpa sect, perched on a hilltop in Hemis, Ladakh, India. The name 'Stakna' translates to 'tiger's nose' in Ladakhi, which aptly describes the shape of the hill it is located on, resembling a tiger’s nose. Founded in the late 16th century by a Bhutanese scholar and saint, Chosje Modzin, the monastery is known for its stunning architecture, vibrant frescoes, and a remarkable collection of Buddhist scriptures and art. It boasts a central courtyard, a significant assembly hall, and several chapels with statues of revered deities and saints. The monastery provides a striking panoramic view of the Indus river and the verdant valley below. As a place of spiritual learning, it houses about 30 monastic residents who engage in daily religious practices and festivities. Stakna’s tranquil environment, coupled with its rich heritage, makes it a profound cultural and spiritual site for visitors.
