Best Time to Visit Hemis National Park

Located in the eastern part of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, Hemis National Park is most well-known for its scenic beauty and the rare and endangered snow leopards. The best time to visit Hemis National Park is during the late spring and summer months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is comparatively mild with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, making daytime exploration of the park more accessible and enjoyable. The snow from winter begins to melt, and the lower valleys and slopes become vibrant with wildflowers and vegetation. This time frame also coincides with the Hemis Festival, a colorful and vibrant affair usually observed in June or July, radiating the cultural richness of the region.

While May and June can offer verdant landscapes and pleasant conditions for the trekkers, wildlife enthusiasts might consider visiting from mid-September to mid-November. This period, leading up to the onset of the harsh winter months, is an excellent time for wildlife spotting as many animals, including the elusive snow leopard, descend to lower altitudes in search of food. However, visitors should be prepared for colder conditions, as temperatures start to drop considerably after September. Trekking to some areas during this time can be challenging, and visitors should be well-equipped for sub-zero temperatures, especially at night.
