History of Tourism

The history of tourism in Hierapolis-Pamukkale can be traced back to antiquity. The site was originally established as a thermal spa in the 2nd century BC by the kings of Pergamon. The ancient city of Hierapolis was built atop the white "castle" of travertine terraces created by the flowing, mineral-rich thermal waters that have drawn visitors for their therapeutic properties for over two millennia.

Throughout the Roman and Byzantine periods, the city continued to serve as a health center. The waters of Pamukkale have been believed to have healing properties, leading to the city's recognition as a center for hydrotherapy and a destination for pilgrimages. Historic remains, including a theatre, temples, the Necropolis, and the Antique Pool, known as Cleopatra's Pool, also attracted historical interest.

In the 20th century, Hierapolis-Pamukkale gained international attention and became a popular spot for global travelers. With the declaration as a World Heritage Site in 1988, the area witnessed a significant increase in tourism activities. Efforts have since been made to preserve the delicate travertine terraces and the ruins, which were being eroded due to excessive tourist activities and uncontrolled access to the thermal waters.
