Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque) and Maldivian Cuisine History

The Hukuru Miskiy, also known as the Old Friday Mosque, is an important historical and cultural site in Malé, Maldives. Constructed in 1658, this mosque is famed for its intricate coral stone carvings and traditional Islamic architecture. It is not directly associated with food, but the history of Maldivian cuisine around this mosque has been influenced by the island's Islamic culture and the bountiful Indian Ocean.

Traditional Maldivian cuisine, also known as "Dhivehi cuisine," revolves prominently around three main ingredients: fish (typically tuna), coconut, and rice. Due to the Islamic dietary laws, pork is not consumed by the local Muslim population, and there is a focus on halal food. The centuries-old trade routes introduced various spices and cooking techniques from Indian, Sri Lankan, Arab, and African cuisines, all of which have contributed to Maldivian culinary traditions.
