Food History of Islamic Centre, Male, Maldives

The Islamic Centre, officially named Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, is the largest mosque in the Maldives located in the capital city, Male. While the centre itself is not specifically tied to a unique food history, the food culture around it reflects the nation's culinary heritage that's tightly woven with its Islamic identity. The Maldivian diet has been traditionally dominated by fish, especially tuna, along with coconut and rice. Due to the Islamic dietary laws, pork is not consumed, and the meat that is consumed is halal. Male's position along ancient trade routes brought in influences from Indian, Sri Lankan, Arabian, and North African cuisines, enriching the local flavors.
