Best Time to Visit Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm

The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa, on the island of Palawan, Philippines, is unique because of its open-air museum status and the opportunity to interact with the inmates who live and work there. The best time to visit Iwahig is during the dry season, which spans from October to May. During these months, visitors are greeted with warm, pleasant weather and minimal rainfall, making the experience more comfortable and accessible. Exploring the penal farm without the inconvenience of rain and muddy grounds is advisable since it allows for easy movement and interaction with the different parts of the area. Additionally, the dry season is perfect for witnessing the farm activities, as inmates are often more engaged in their various duties, such as farming, fishing, and crafting souvenirs.

April and May are particularly popular as these months coincide with the summer vacation in the Philippines, which brings in both local and foreign tourists. However, it is also the hottest period, so visitors preferring cooler weather may opt to go around December to February. During these times, the climate is comparatively cooler, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. Visiting Iwahig during national holidays or the Christmas season can also be an interesting experience as the inmates often prepare special programs and presentations. It is also important to note that the farm operates from Monday to Friday, with guided tours commonly available in the morning, making it optimal to plan your visit within these days and times.
