Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
The Japanese Covered Bridge, also known as Chua Cau, stands as a beautiful historical piece of Japanese architecture in the heart of Hoi An, Vietnam. Constructed in the 1590s by the Japanese community of Hoi An, this bridge has been meticulously maintained, serving as a cultural landmark and symbol of the significant impact of Japanese merchants in the area. The bridge's architecture reflects the strong Japanese aesthetic influence, with a gracefully arched structure and a roof that provides shelter. At one period, the bridge also included a Japanese temple and was used for community gatherings. The bridge was originally built to connect the Japanese community with the Chinese quarters across the stream, indicating both a practical and a symbolic gesture of peace and friendship. Over the centuries, while Hoi An developed into a bustling trading port, the bridge remained an enduring attraction. Its presence captures the blending of cultures and the rich history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The bridge's ornate decorations and the guardian statues at either end—dogs on the western side, monkeys on the eastern side—add a layer of cultural significance, as these animals are thought to represent birth years of many Japanese emperors.

Complete bummer!
Was looking forward for the obligatory photo of this ancient bridge, surprised to turn the corner and see that it’s under renovation and would be for years. Nothing to see as you can pass through, do..

Give it a miss.
The bridge is under renovations and is covered by a big shed. You can go up close to see the construction but there is nothing much. Definitely not photo worthy. Would suggest to visit only after all ..

Under construction
It’s fully covered ???? … as in under construction. There’s an opening that one can peak what was the Japanese covered bridge.

Hoi an wooden bridge
A little disappointed they are renovating the bridge at the moment. Would have been nice if the bridge was intact . Maybe next time I come over it will be finished.

disappointed
We are really disappointed. This bridge is being repaired, losing its value. You also have to pay to see it. What a waste of our time.
