My Son Sanctuary (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Tourism
Type of destination: Cultural
Ideal visit duration: 1-3 hours
My Son Sanctuary is an exceptional example of cultural interchange, bearing testimony to the unique culture of the ancient Champa Kingdom. Located in the southern part of Vietnam, near the village of Duy Phú, Hoi An, this complex is surrounded by a lush forested area and nestled in a narrow valley. My Son is considered one of the foremost Hindu temple complexes in Southeast Asia and is the foremost heritage site of this nature in Vietnam. It features impressive tower-temples, exhibiting a unique architectural style reminiscent of the Indian sub-continent, yet distinctly Champa. These structures were built between the 4th and 13th centuries to honor Hindu divinities such as Krishna, Vishnu, and especially Shiva. Although bombings during the Vietnam War damaged many of the temples, the site retains much of its original form. Excavations and renovations have uncovered historical artefacts and continue to contribute to the understanding of the Champa's political, cultural, and spiritual development. Visitors can explore the intriguing ruins, which are atmospheric and characterized by intricate stone carvings, and learn about the region's rich history.
