The largest collection of ironwood trees in SL
We loved the stroll through this 'park' and the light trek up the quartz hill. It doesn't look to be the most popular park to visit, but from a cultural point of view and also as a source of income to preserve this beautiful site, it really worth a visit. Beautiful and long-standing swaths of ironwood trees as far as the eye can see. The best thing about it not oozing with crowds is that there's no litter, lesser human impact and those who make it a point to visit there, will be able to enjoy its true essence to the fullest. The walk is quite easy and it is mostly in shade, until you get to the top to the quartz hill. We were lucky as it was a cloudy (yet humid) day, so we were able to spend a good amount of time enjoying the view from the top. But, boy imagine it gets scorching hot there on a proper sunny day. Shoes are highly advisable if you are planning on walking on the quartz rocks, but the trail in the forest is well marked and paved so just about anyone can do it. There's also a few archelogical sites set within the park as well. Namal Uyana is a short drive from Sigiriya and we visited on our way back to Colombo from Dambulla/Sigiriya.
