Welcome to Kaichi Gakko Primary School, Matsumoto, Japan

Located in the heart of Matsumoto city, in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, the Kaichi Gakko Primary School stands as a historical gem and a testament to the educational reforms during the Meiji era. Established in 1873, just after the Meiji Restoration, the school was one of the first institutions to adopt the modern education system in Japan. It was a pivotal time when the country was rapidly embracing Western influences and methodologies.

A Glimpse into the Past

The stunning Western-style architecture harmoniously blended with Japanese elements makes Kaichi School a unique tourist attraction. It was designed by a British architect, Josiah Conder, who played a significant role in merging Western and Japanese architectural styles. Initially functioning as an elementary school, Kaichi Gakko now serves as an educational museum that provides visitors with a rich historical perspective on the evolution of Japan's education system.
