Kalpeni Islands is a group of islands in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India. Located about 287 kilometers off the coast of Kerala in the Arabian Sea, Kalpeni along with two small islets nearby, together form a single atoll. It is renowned for its striking beauty, characterized by sandy beaches and lush green landscape contrasted with the blue of the sea. The coral reefs surrounding the island are home to a diverse range of marine life, which makes it an admirable spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. The lagoon encircling Kalpeni is shallow and rich in marine fauna, offering a perfect environment for water sports. Moreover, the island has a rich cultural fabric, with influences seen in the local cuisine, dance forms like Parichakali, and the intricately designed mosques. Traditional life on Kalpeni is simple and revolves around coconut cultivation, fishing, and boat building. Visitors can experience the relaxed pace of island life here and the warmth of the local community. The island also has a significant place in history as it was here that a small French contingent led by François Pyrard de Laval was shipwrecked in the 16th century.
