Minicoy Island Tourism

Minicoy Island, also known as Maliku in local language, is located at the southernmost end of the Lakshadweep archipelago, off the southwestern coast of India. This island is the second largest in the Lakshadweep group and is renowned for its vibrant culture, which is distinctly different from the mainland. Minicoy Island is crescent-shaped and has one of the largest lagoons in Lakshadweep. The island is fringed by white sandy beaches and an extensive coral reef that attracts divers from around the world. It is a popular destination for water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving, owing to its rich marine life and clear turquoise waters. The lighthouse of Minicoy, constructed by the British in 1885, is another notable landmark, offering panoramic views of the island from its summit. The culture here is influenced by the Maldives as many inhabitants speak Mahl, a dialect of Divehi. Traditional practices such as the lava dance, tuna fishing, and boat building are integral aspects of Minicoy's heritage.
