Best Time To Visit Kamikochi (Matsumoto) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Kamikochi, Matsumoto, Japan

Kamikochi, located in the heart of the Japanese Alps in Matsumoto, is one of the country's premiere mountain resorts known for its breathtaking scenic beauty. The best time to visit Kamikochi is during the late spring and early summer months, particularly from late April to the end of July. During this period, the snow has melted, and the area comes to life with vibrant green foliage and a variety of alpine flowers. The mild temperatures in spring make for comfortable hiking conditions, allowing visitors to explore the trails and soak in views of the pristine Azusa River and the surrounding peaks like Hotaka and Yake. However, it's also the time when the park is the busiest, especially during the Golden Week holiday at the beginning of May.

Alternatively, the autumn season, from late September to early November, is also highly recommended for visitors seeking a more tranquil experience. During this time, Kamikochi is illuminated with the fiery colors of autumn leaves – a phenomenon known as "koyo" in Japanese. The crisp air and fewer visitors compared to spring provide a peaceful setting for enjoying the autumnal beauty. Keep in mind, though, that temperatures start to drop, so warm clothing is essential. Also, as Kamikochi generally closes to the public from mid-November to late April due to heavy snowfall, ensure your visit is planned well within the open months to avoid disappointment.
