Kargah Buddha Food History

While the Kargah Buddha itself is a historical archaeological site and does not have a distinct food history, the region of Gilgit, where the Kargah Buddha is located, has a rich culinary tradition. Gilgit is part of the larger Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, where the cuisine is influenced by Central Asian, South Asian, and East Asian cooking styles, reflecting the area's historical role as a cultural crossroads. The ingredients used are often locally sourced, utilizing the bounties of the mountainous terrain, such as wheat, barley, maize, and vegetables. While the region traditionally leans towards meat-based dishes, particularly due to the harsh winters where the vegetarian options are somewhat limited, there are various seasonal vegetarian dishes that are also integral to the local cuisine.
