Food History of Khinalug Mosque, Khinalug, Azerbaijan

Khinalug Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the rich cultural history of Khinalug village, which is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. The cuisine in Khinalug, like Azerbaijani cuisine in general, has been influenced by the rugged natural environment, which includes high-altitude meadows and pastures. The food is known for its simplicity and the use of fresh, local ingredients that are available in the mountainous regions.

Over the centuries, the villagers of Khinalug have developed their own unique dishes to sustain them through the harsh winters and take advantage of the limited agricultural produce. They traditionally consume a lot of dairy products, grains, vegetables, and meats other than cow, such as lamb, chicken, and fish. The mosque, as the center of the community, has often played a role in sharing these traditional dishes during religious and social gatherings.
