Ideal visit duration: 1-2 days
Khinalug, also spelled Khinalig, is an ancient Caucasian village located high up in the mountains of Quba Rayon, Azerbaijan. Nestled at an elevation of around 2,350 meters above sea level, it's one of the country's highest and most isolated settlements. The village boasts a rich history that spans over a millennium, and its inhabitants, considered a separate ethnographic group, have their own language. Khinalug's unique architecture is characterized by tightly clustered houses that descend down a hillside, seemingly stacked atop each other. These homes, made with local materials, have adapted to the harsh mountainous conditions. Khinalug is surrounded by a picturesque landscape, with rugged mountains, deep gorges, and pristine rivers, making it an attractive destination for hikers and cultural tourists. Despite its remote location, the village has been preserved remarkably well, offering insights into the traditional ways of life. Cultural landmarks include the ancient mosque and the village's ethnographic museum. Khinalug is not just a village, but also a representation of human resilience and the ability to thrive in the most challenging environments.
