Khonoma Green Village is located about 20 kilometers from the state capital, Kohima, in Nagaland, India. It is renowned for its rich biodiversity and the conservation efforts of the local community, particularly with regards to the preservation of the endangered Blyth's Tragopan. The village is inhabited by the Angami Naga tribe and has become a model for community-led conservation, recognized as India's first ‘green village’. The terraced fields, which practice alder-based jhum cultivation (a traditional form of shifting agriculture), are a testament to the sustainable agricultural practices of the Angami people. The village's serene environment, coupled with its culture and history, provide a unique insight into the life of the Naga tribes. The architecture of the village's houses and the memorial stones are symbolic of the villagers' valor and their ancestral spirits. A visit to Khonoma Green Village not only provides tranquility away from city life, but also offers an educational experience on the importance of environmental preservation practiced by indigenous communities.
