Best Time to Visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery

Visiting the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery in Bentota, Sri Lanka, is a memorable experience for wildlife enthusiasts. The ideal time to visit this sanctuary is during the main nesting season of sea turtles, which usually falls between October and April. During this period, you have a higher chance of witnessing mother turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. The likelihood of observing hatchlings making their way to the sea is also greater. Evening visits can be particularly enchanting, as turtles are more active at night. However, to ensure the safety and protection of these creatures, always be accompanied by a trained guide for night-time excursions.

Another factor to consider when planning your trip is the weather conditions. Sri Lanka typically experiences a tropical monsoon climate. Consequently, the months from December to March offer the most favorable weather, with less rainfall and a more comfortable temperature, making it an excellent time for tourists. Nevertheless, the hatchery operates throughout the year, allowing visitors to learn about turtle conservation and possibly interact with the hatchlings at any time. To avoid the crowds and have a more personal experience, consider visiting on a weekday or outside of traditional holiday periods.
