The Maluti Temples, located in the village of Maluti near Dumka in the state of Jharkhand, India, represent a significant but lesser-known cluster of terracotta temples. These temples date back to the 17th century and are a testament to the Baj Basanta dynasty's patronage. Even though many of them have not withstood the test of time, there are still about 72 of the original 108 temples existing, showcasing an intricate art form and exquisite craftsmanship. The temples are adorned with panels that depict scenes from Hindu mythology, including stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. This cluster of temples is unique as it is one of the few remaining examples of the Bengali school of architecture that flourished in the area. In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve this cultural heritage. The temples have become an important site for local festivals like Diwali when people from surrounding areas come to worship. The artistry of the Malooti Temples speaks volumes about the cultural synthesis and the aesthetic sensibilities of the region’s past.
