Matheran is a small hill station in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India, known for its salubrious climate and serene landscapes. Located on the Western Ghats range at an elevation of around 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level, it's one of the few places in the world where vehicles are banned, making it a very quiet and peaceful place. Matheran's name means 'forest on the forehead (of the mountains)'. It is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station, which makes it a unique destination. The town is known for its colonial architecture, including British-style bungalows, and there are around 38 official lookout points, including Panorama Point, Echo Point, and Louisa Point, offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and valley. The toy train, officially known as the Matheran Hill Railway, is a highlight of the visit, offering picturesque views on its way to the station. The region's biodiversity also makes it a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers.
