Best Time to Visit Matsumoto Castle

Travelers looking to witness the majestic allure of Matsumoto Castle will find that the most opportune time to visit this historic fortress is during the spring, specifically from late March to early April. This is when the cherry blossoms, or sakura, are in full bloom, creating a picturesque backdrop for the castle's striking black and white structure. The castle's park is filled with over 300 cherry trees, and the annual Matsumoto Castle Cherry Blossom Festival attracts numerous visitors who come to enjoy the delightful view of sakura blossoms and the castle reflected on the surrounding moat. During this time, the area is lively with food stalls, and there are evening illuminations that enhance the beauty of the blossoms under the night sky, making for a truly enchanting experience.

Another great time to visit Matsumoto Castle is during the fall when the foliage offers a brilliant display of autumn colors usually from mid-October to early November. This season allows visitors to enjoy cooler temperatures and the striking contrast of the castle against the vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges of the autumn leaves. Moreover, fewer tourists during this season means a more peaceful visit. If you're interested in Japanese history and culture, you might also want to consider participating in the Matsumoto Castle Moon Viewing Party, held in September, an event where visitors can enjoy Japanese tea ceremony demonstrations accompanied by the sight of the full moon rising above the historic keep.
