Mount Suyang and its surrounding regions, including Haeju, have a culinary history that dates back centuries and is influenced by the local agriculture, climate, and historical trade routes. North Korean cuisine, in general, tends to be less spicy compared to its southern counterpart. The area around Haeju is known for its cold noodles, known as naengmyeon, which have been adapted to local tastes and available ingredients.
