Type of destination: County
Ideal visit duration: 2-3 days
Nantou County, located at the geographic center of Taiwan, is famed for its breathtaking mountainous terrain and scenic beauty. Unlike other counties in Taiwan, Nantou is the only landlocked county on the island. Its administrative center is Nantou City, which provides a gateway to various natural attractions. Covering an area of 4,106.436 square kilometers, the county is home to the highest peak in East Asia, Yushan or Jade Mountain, and the popular Sun Moon Lake, which is the largest body of water in Taiwan. There are numerous cultural sites, such as the Wenwu Temple, and aboriginal villages that preserve the rich heritage of the indigenous communities. Nantou is also known for its tea plantations which produce high-quality Oolong tea. The region experiences a variety of climates due to its varying altitudes, encompassing tropical and subtropical zones. It is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts offering activities such as hiking, cycling, and boating. Despite the destruction caused by the 921 earthquake in 1999, Nantou has rebuilt and remains a significant cultural and ecological destination in Taiwan.
