History of Tourism in Naogaon Town and Paharpur

The history of tourism in the Naogaon district of Bangladesh, especially in Paharpur, is intrinsically linked to the archaeological significance of the area. The region gained substantial recognition following the discovery of the ruins of Somapura Mahavihara, a Buddhist monastery dating back to the 8th century CE, which is located in the village of Paharpur.

Somapura Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been a focal point for tourists, both local and international, interested in historical and cultural tourism. Discovered in the late 19th century, archaeological excavations began early in the 20th century and have since unveiled a wealth of historical information.

The influx of tourists began slowly after Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, as the government and international community started to promote the region's history. By the 1990s, the number of visitors to Paharpur began to grow significantly as awareness of the site increased, making it a must-visit for those exploring the subcontinent's rich Buddhist heritage.
