Old Goris Tourism

Old Goris, also known as 'Old Kores' or 'Kores', is a historic area located near the modern town of Goris, in the Syunik Province of Armenia. This fascinating site is situated on the rocky hills of the region, where medieval cave dwellings carved into the tuff stone cliffs by the inhabitants can still be seen today. It is a testament to the unique architectural tradition of carving out homes, churches, and community centers from the rock, a custom that dates back hundreds of years. The inhabitants of Old Goris were known to live there until the 18th century before the existing Goris city was established. The landscape around Old Goris is rugged and picturesque, featuring deep canyons, striking rock formations, and a verdant valley that creates a dramatic contrast with the stone dwellings. Visitors can explore the countless caves, some of which are multi-storied and interconnected, that served as residences, stables, and storage rooms. The area also includes ancient ruins and historical sites, like the 4th-century St. Hripsime Church, adding to its archeological and cultural significance.
