Food History of Paektu Secret Camp, Samjiyon, North Korea

The Paektu Secret Camp is known as a historic site where Kim Il-sung's anti-Japanese guerrilla activities took place during the 1930s. It is revered in North Korean culture and presented as a place of crucial importance to the foundation of the country. As a result, the area around Mt. Paektu, including Samjiyon, is often depicted more for its historical significance and natural beauty rather than for a distinctive food culture.

However, North Korean cuisine in general has been influenced by the mountainous terrain and the harsh winters. Staple foods include rice, corn, and kimchi, while provisions from hunting and foraging played a role in the diet of guerrillas.
