St. Peter's Church, known locally as Peterskirche, is Munich's oldest Catholic parish church, with origins dating back to before the foundation of the city itself. It sits on a small hill known as the Petersbergl and was consecrated in a spot that's been a place of worship since the 8th century. The present building took on its Gothic form during the 14th century, and despite suffering substantial damage during World War II, it was lovingly restored to its former glory. Inside, the church's elaborate decoration includes a stunning gold-leaf high altar, numerous side altars, and ceiling frescoes that narrate the life of Saint Peter. The church is also famous for the relics of Saint Munditia. Climbing the church tower's 299 steps rewards visitors with a panoramic view of Munich and beyond, including a glimpse of the nearby Alps on clear days. The church's affectionate nickname, 'Alter Peter' – Old Peter – points to its place in the hearts of Munich's residents.
