The Munich Residenz served as the royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs for centuries and is situated in the heart of Munich, near the Odeonsplatz. It is the largest city palace in Germany and showcases a rich blend of architectural styles, from Renaissance to Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism. The Residenz originated in 1385 as a small castle and expanded to become the magnificent compound we see today. Tourists can explore numerous rooms and halls such as the Antiquarium, the Hall of Ancestors, and the ornately decorated Royal Apartments. The vast palace complex also includes the Treasury, which houses a stunning collection of jewels, crowns, and precious artifacts. Additionally, the Residenz contains ten courtyards and the exquisite Court Garden. The Cuvilliés Theatre is a remarkable example of Rococo theatre architecture within the Residenz. This historical site does not only offer a glimpse into the lavish lifestyles of the Bavarian royalty but also houses an extensive collection of European art history from the early 16th to the early 20th century.
