Plaosan Temple, located near Yogyakarta in Indonesia, is an enchanting historical site that dates back to the 9th century. This Buddhist temple complex is notable for its blend of Hindu and Buddhist architectural influences, reflective of a period when Java was transitioning between religions. Comprising two main groups known as the North and South Temples, Plaosan Temple is famous for its detailed reliefs and numerous Buddha and Bodhisattva statues. The intricate carvings depict various scenes and symbols that provide insight into the religious practices and cultural exchanges of the era. Set against a picturesque backdrop of rice fields and the Mount Merapi volcano, the temple offers a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere. Restoration work has been undertaken to preserve its remarkable artistic and architectural features. Visitors are often struck by the serenity of the site and the harmonious balance between the temple structures and the surrounding natural landscape. Plaosan Temple is less crowded than the nearby Prambanan Temple, allowing for a more intimate exploration of its beauty and history.
Lovely temple with very few visitors. Took about an hour to explore. Is open on Mondays, so a good option when main temples are closed.
